Green Brewfest Hat ~ Knitting Pattern

This felted Green Brewfest Hat is perfect to wear during a real life Brewfest (Oktoberfest), or while at home enjoying Brewfest in-game on your character. It can be knitted with any felt-able wool yarn, and in any desired color.

How to Make this Hat

Materials

  • 2 skeins of medium weight – yarn that requires from size US 7-9 (4.5-5.5 mm) knitting needles – feltable, wool yarn in your favorite Brewfest Hat color.
I used “I LOVE THIS WOOL” in Dark Olive for this hat. Make sure that your yarn is 100%, or close to 100% (my yarn was 93% wool and 7% polyamide), wool yarn, otherwise, it will not felt properly.

  • Size US 10 (6.0 mm) double pointed needles (you will need 4).

  • Size US 10 (6.0 mm) 16 inch circular needle.

  • Yarn marker or loop of contrasting color yarn (if needed to keep track of knitting).

  • Tapestry needle.

Abbreviation List

  • CO = cast on yarn, preferably long tail cast on.
  • St(s) = stitch(es).
  • K = Knit (K1 = knit one, K2 = knit 2, and so on).
  • KFB = Knit front to back, an increase.
  • BO = bind off yarn.

Let’s Knit!

** Important Note**This pattern knits with both skeins of the yarn at the same time. If you chose a larger, chunkier yarn (which is fine) just knit with one strand…and…you probably only needed 1 skein of it ^_^ .**

Aside: I found a crochete pattern that would work great to make a Brewfest Hat for all those who crochet instead of knit. See it here!

Start with your DPN’s, and with TWO strands of yarn, CO 6 sts. Divide these sts over 3 needles, 2 on each needle.

Round 1: K
Round 2: KFB into each st. (12 sts)
Round 3: K
Round 4: KFB into each st. (24 sts)
Round 5: K
Round 6: *K1, KFB into next st* Repeat from * around. (36 sts)
Round 7: K
Round 8: *K2, KFB into next st* Repeat from * around. (48 sts)
Round 9: K
Round 10: (first needle) KFB, K2, KFB, K1, KFB, K1, KFB, K2, KFB, K2, KFB, K1, KFB, (second needle) KFB, K1, KFB, K2, KFB, K1, KFB, K2, KFB, K1, KFB, K1, KFB, KFB, (third needle) KFB, K2, KFB, K1, KFB, K1, KFB, K2, KFB, K2, KFB, K1, KFB. (70 sts)

I apologize if this round instruction was a little confusing. You should have increased sts to where there are 23 sts on two needles and 24 sts on one needle, for a total of 70 sts.

Round 11: K
Round 12: *KFB, K to last st on needle, KFB* repeat process on the two remaining needles. (76 sts)

At this point, transfer your sts from the DPN’s to your circular needle; place a yarn marker at the start of the round, if necessary.

Knit rounds evenly until the the piece is 7 inches from the CO sts.

Round 13: *K4, KFB into next st* Repeat from * 14 more times (15 increases), K to end of round. (91 sts)

Knit rounds evenly for 2 more inches, for a total of 9 inches from CO sts

Round 14: *K4, KFB into next st* Repeat from * 14 more times (15 increases), K to end of round. (106 sts)

Knit rounds evenly for 2 more inches, for a total of 11 inches from CO sts

Round 15: *K4, KFB into next st* Repeat from * 14 more times (15 increases), K to end of round. (121 sts)

Knit rounds evenly for 2 more inches, for a total of 13 inches from CO sts.

BO loosely so the brim of the hat will lay flat.

Felt in the washer with hot water until the knitted piece as shrunk down about 4-5 inches (my finally measurement was 8 inches long by 9.5 inches wide (at the brim) ). For more felting techniques, check out this link: How to Felt a Project.

    After the felting process.

Once felted, shape hat into your best Brewfest Hat shape, and let dry. I used pins to hold my folds in shape. After the hat had dried for about a day, I sprayed heavy-duty starch on it, and used a blow dryer to dry the creases with the starch into shape. It holds its form pretty well ^_^.

    A shaped, and drying, hat

After the hat had dried, I embellished it with a lighter green knitted ribbing, feathers in correlating colors to match the Green Brewfest Hat (or any other color of Brewfest Hat) in-game, and an approximately 2×2 inch square of white felt. I hot glued it all to the hat, but, I guess you could sew it too, if you have the time and patience.

My ribbing pattern can be seen here. Instead of knitting the ribbing, you may also choose to use actual ribbon or cording for your hat. It is totally up to you.

Hope you enjoy making and wearing your Brewfest Hat!
